Going to TechBBQ? How International Talent Can Make the Most of It

TechBBQ is more than two days of talks and startup showcases. For international professionals in Denmark, it can be a chance to meet employers, build relationships and understand where opportunities are emerging.

f you’re an international professional attending TechBBQ in Copenhagen next week, don’t treat it as just another technology conference.

With thousands of people from the startup and innovation ecosystem expected at Bella Center on 26 and 27 August, the real value may be the people you meet between the sessions.

TechBBQ’s Tech Talent programme is specifically designed to connect Danish startups and scaleups with talent. For participating professionals, TechBBQ highlights personalised matches with relevant companies, potential leads to employment and access to the summit.

But even beyond the formal programme, international professionals can use TechBBQ strategically to build their careers in Denmark.

1. Don’t try to meet everyone

TechBBQ is big. Trying to speak to as many people as possible isn’t necessarily the best strategy.

Instead, decide before you arrive what you want from the event.

Are you looking for a new job?

Trying to move into a startup?

Looking for a company that values international experience?

Exploring a new industry?

Interested in meeting founders or hiring managers?

Having a clear goal makes it much easier to decide which conversations are worth your time.

2. Use matchmaking instead of relying only on chance

TechBBQ’s event app includes matchmaking designed to help attendees find relevant people and arrange meetings. The platform uses AI-powered matching based on interests and needs, with one-to-one meetings that can be scheduled in advance.

For an international professional, this can be particularly useful.

Don’t wait until you arrive at Bella Center to decide who you want to meet.

Look for companies, founders, recruiters and professionals who are relevant to your career goals and request conversations where possible.

A 15-minute focused conversation can be more valuable than a full day of random networking.

3. Make your international experience part of your story

International experience can be a strong advantage, especially for startups and scaleups looking beyond Denmark.

But don’t simply say:

“I’m an international professional.”

Explain what your international background brings to a company.

Have you worked across several markets?

Do you understand international customers?

Have you built teams across countries?

Do you speak several languages?

Have you helped a company enter a new market?

These are concrete reasons a growing company may benefit from your experience.

4. Talk to startups, not only recruiters

If you’re looking for work, don’t spend the entire event looking for recruitment booths.

Talk to founders.

Talk to product leaders.

Talk to people working in companies you’re interested in.

Ask them about their business, their growth plans and the skills they’re looking for.

TechBBQ describes its wider ecosystem as bringing together startups, investors, corporates and other key players, so the event can offer connections beyond traditional recruitment conversations.

Sometimes the most useful conversation isn’t with someone who has a vacancy today.

It may be with someone who remembers you when a role opens three months later.

5. Prepare your LinkedIn before you arrive

If you meet someone interesting, there’s a good chance they’ll look you up afterwards.

Make sure your LinkedIn profile answers three simple questions quickly:

  • What do you do?
  • What are you good at?
  • What are you looking for?

Your headline should be specific rather than simply saying “Open to Work”.

Your profile should also show measurable achievements, relevant experience and the type of role or company you’re interested in.

6. Don’t make every conversation a job pitch

Networking works better when it feels like a conversation rather than a sales pitch.

Ask questions:

  • What are you building?
  • What markets are you entering?
  • What skills are difficult for you to find?
  • How are you approaching international expansion?
  • What kind of people are you hoping to meet at TechBBQ?

You may discover an opportunity simply by understanding what a company needs.

7. Follow up quickly

This is where many networking opportunities disappear.

If you have a useful conversation, connect on LinkedIn while the conversation is still fresh.

Then send a short personal message.

Don’t write a generic:

“Nice meeting you at TechBBQ.”

Mention what you discussed and why you’d like to stay connected.

If there is a potential job or collaboration, suggest a specific next step.

8. Look beyond the main programme

TechBBQ isn’t limited to the main stages.

The event also has side events and partner activities around Copenhagen, while different event rooms operate during the summit itself.

For international professionals, these smaller settings can sometimes make it easier to have a real conversation than a crowded conference floor.

Check the programme before you arrive and choose a few sessions or events that match your interests.

The real opportunity

TechBBQ won’t automatically turn into a job offer.

TechBBQ itself says that the Tech Talent programme cannot guarantee a relevant position for every participant.

The bigger opportunity is access.

Access to people.

Access to companies.

Access to conversations you might not otherwise have.

For international professionals trying to build a career in Denmark, that’s valuable.

So when you walk into Bella Center next week, don’t ask yourself:

“How many people can I meet?”

Ask:

“Who are the five people I really want to meet, and what can I learn from them?”

That shift can turn TechBBQ from another conference into a useful career opportunity.
